How To Have a Courageous Conversation with Confidence

The difficult part of most courageous conversations isn't the conversation itself; it's just knowing you need to have it.

But how?! 😨

I’m Dr. Elisa Glick and I help leaders build trust in the workplace, one courageous conversation at a time. Welcome to my Courageous Conversation series! Every Monday in July I'm posting tools and strategies for navigating courageous conversations.

Today, let's roll up our proverbial sleeves and discuss how to stop worrying, stressing, and procrastinating and have a courageous conversation with confidence!

Ten Strategies for Having Courageous Conversations

1️⃣ Prepare: Get clear about your purpose for having the conversation and desired outcome. Ask yourself...
📝 What assumptions am I making about this person's (or persons') intentions, beliefs, or actions?
📝 What might the other person be thinking and feeling about the situation?
📝 How have I contributed to the problem? Mistakes are a part of the human experience. Reflect on your actions and be honest about where you may need to take ownership.

2️⃣ Make it safe. Consider the physical location. Minimize distractions. Use an equal seating arrangement.
3️⃣ Observe without evaluation or diagnosis.
4️⃣ Express your feelings and needs. Use “I” statements. Be vulnerable and authentic. Don’t be afraid to be assertive.
5️⃣ Listen actively to demonstrate understanding & empathy. People often need empathy before they can hear what’s being said.

6️⃣ “Hold space” for those with different experiences and perspectives by listening without judgment.
7️⃣ Normalize repair, not harm. Apologize when appropriate. When we practice accountability and repair harm, courageous conversations can be a catalyst for healing and growth. Accept responsibility for our actions, but not for the feelings of others.
8️⃣ Find common ground. What can you agree on?
9️⃣ Make a specific request (not a demand) to address your needs.
🔟 Collaborate on solutions that are win-win.
