The Courage to Thrive
The essence of courage is transforming fears and challenges into opportunities for growth and human flourishing.
Today I celebrate being cancer free for 11 years!! This journey has taught me so much about resilience, courage, and thriving. After my diagnosis I realized that, during a crisis, our first responsibility is to our own well-being. In honor of my cancerversary, I'm sharing 4 life lessons from my breast cancer journey:
1. Claim Your Power. I never thought of myself as strong, but cancer helped me to recognize my own strength. Even when I felt afraid and uncertain, I still had the capacity to rise and thrive. And so do you!
2. Own Your Story and How You Share It. There's a lot of power in embracing the truth of your own unique journey. But remember, authenticity doesn’t mean sharing everything you’re experiencing, to everyone, all of the time. Your story is yours to tell. Vulnerability isn’t something you owe others, even when they’re asking you for it.
3. Don’t Let Fear Stand in the Way of Joy. For much of my life, happiness has been elusive for me because of my health issues and being disowned by my family after coming out. But through breast cancer I discovered the power of experiencing joy instead of being afraid of losing it. In fact, that’s the reason why my spouse and I got married after my surgeries and treatment!
4. Live Your Best Life NOW. Being a cancer survivor has given me a clarity about how I want to live my life and the work I feel called to do. If you want to make a change, don’t wait for “someday.” Today is the day to love deeply, live fully, and lead boldly.
When we infuse our lives and work with passion, power, and purpose, everyone thrives.
